Living HIstory

We have been "living history" since we got here. Our first stop south of Rome was in Monte Casino, where the Canadians participated in a WW2 battle to push the Germans out of Italy. If you look closely at the picture from the Casino Commenwealth Military Cemetary you will see it's a soldier from the Princess Patricia's Light Infantry -- a regiment I've always been interested in because my father was a member during the Korean war. We also visited Ponte Corvo where they fought their main battle and found a large memorial and a wreath with the word CANADA on display. It was interesting to feel that we, as Canadians, are part of Italy's history too.

Our next stop was Pompeii, where we spent a happy day wandering the ruins and imagining ourselves in ancient times. We also visited Herculenium, where there are fewer sights to see but the places that exist are much better preserved. We did NOT go into Naples to see the museum where many of the artifacts are preserved, we like to limit Nelson's city driving to the ring roads on the outside of the chaos!

John, inviting us for a meal at a Roman "fast food" stall in Herculenium.

Wahing up at a fountain on the road in Pompeii.

On the way south we drove the famous Amalfi Coast road....more to follow!
