Greeks, Romans and Normans

The Amalfi Coast is a spectacular cliff-side place,. the narrow twising roads are excellent for a drive with view, not so great for the tour busses and motor homes. We could see the Isle of Capri behind us in the Bay of Naples as we drove south, and from our hotel room that night we could see the Island of Stromboli. Stromboli is an active volcano but it did not put on a light show for us.

We have gone pre-Roman and visited several Greek sites. Big bits of temples and theatres and sarcofigi (sargophigi?...bit granite coffins with paintings on the inside!) are pretty much all that remains. Oh, and the pottery! It's absolutely fantastic to see the vivid paintings of the ideal Grecian life that decorate the pottery.
Of course it has not been all Roman theatres and Greek temples. The Normans built on every high point of the coast, so we've stormed a few castle walls as well.
